Introduction to Tankless Water Heaters

If you have a tankless water heater, then it’s time to say goodbye to low water pressure! Descaling your tankless water heater is a process that removes mineral deposits from the inside of your heater. This can help improve your water pressure and make your heater last longer.

There are many benefits to descaling your tankless water heater, including:

1. improved water pressure
2. increased efficiency
3. longer lifespan for your heater
4. protection from corrosion and other damage
5. less build-up of minerals in your pipes

What is Descaling?

If your tankless water heater is giving you low water pressure, it might be time to descale it. Descaling is the process of removing mineral deposits from the inside of your water heater. These deposits can build up over time and cause your water heater to work less efficiently.

Descaling is a simple process that you can do yourself with a few household supplies. It only takes a few minutes and can help improve the performance of your water heater. Plus, it’s a good way to keep your water heater clean and free of mineral buildup.

There are many benefits to descaling your tankless water heater, including:

1. Improving water pressure – If you’ve been dealing with low water pressure, descaling can help solve the problem. Mineral deposits can restrict the flow of water through the pipes, causing low water pressure. Removing these deposits can improve water flow and increase water pressure.

2. Extending the life of your water heater – Descaling can also extend the life of your tankless water heater by preventing corrosion and mineral buildup. These things can damage the internal components of your water heater and lead to early failure. By keeping your water heater clean and free of buildup, you can help it last longer.

3. Increasing efficiency – Another benefit of descaling is that it can make your tankless water heater more efficient. When mineral deposits build up inside the unit, they can cause decreased performance and higher energy bills. By removing these deposits, you can help improve the performance of your unit, and make it more efficient.

Benefits of Descaling Your Tankless Water Heater

If your tankless water heater isn’t working as efficiently as it used to, or if you’ve noticed a drop in water pressure, it may be time to descale your tankless water heater. Descaling is the process of removing mineral deposits from the heating elements and internal components of your tankless water heater. While mineral build-up is natural and happens over time, it can reduce the efficiency of your tankless water heater and cause problems with low water pressure.

Descaling your tankless water heater on a regular basis can help to extend its lifespan and keep it operating at peak performance. In addition to improving efficiency, descaling can also help to prevent corrosion and scale build-up on the heating elements. This can prolong the life of your tankless water heater and keep it running like new for years to come!

How Often Should You Descale?

The frequency with which you descale your tankless water heater will depend on a few factors, including the hardness of your water and the amount of use your system gets. However, most manufacturers recommend descaling every six to twelve months as a general rule. If you live in an area with especially hard water, or if you use your system frequently, you may need to descale more often.

Step-by-Step Guide for Descaling Your Water Heater

Assuming you have already turned off the power to your water heater, the first step is to open up the cold water inlet valve and attach a hose to the drain valve. Next, open up the drain valve and let the water drain out until it starts running clear. Once the water runs clear, close the drain valve and remove the hose.

The next step is to mix together a descaling solution using either white vinegar or citric acid. Once you have your solution mixed, turn on the cold water inlet valve and let the solution run through your unit for about 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, turn off the cold water inlet valve and let the solution sit in your unit for another 30 minutes.

Once the 30 minutes is up, turn on your unit and let it run until all of the solution has been flushed out. When you are finished flushing out your unit, be sure to flush it out with clean water a few times to remove any residual descaling solution.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Descaling

Descaling your tankless water heater is a great way to improve the efficiency of your unit and prevent costly repairs down the road. However, there are a few common mistakes that people make when descaling their tankless water heaters which can cause more harm than good. In this article, we’ll discuss some of the most common mistakes made during the descaling process and how to avoid them.

One of the most common mistakes made during descaling is using the wrong type of cleaner. Many people mistakenly use vinegar or other acidic cleaners which can damage the sensitive parts of your tankless water heater. Only use cleaners that are specifically designed for descaling tankless water heaters.

Another mistake people make is not properly rinsing away all the cleaners after descaling. If any cleaner is left behind, it can cause build-up and corrosion over time. Be sure to thoroughly rinse your unit with clean water after using a cleaner designed for descaling.

People sometimes forget to turn off their tankless water heaters before starting the descaling process. This can result in serious damage to your unit if the cleaner gets into the heating element. Always remember to turn off your unit and disconnect it from power before starting any cleaning or maintenance work.

Conclusion

Descaling your tankless water heater is essential to keeping your water pressure up and running. Not only does it help restore the performance of your tankless water heater, but it helps prolong its lifespan so you don’t have to worry about buying a new one anytime soon. With descaling being quick and easy, there really is no reason not to take advantage of the benefits that come from improving the longevity of your tankless water heater today!

I was surprised when I came on Google and saw bad reviews. But then usually people who are happy don't post, only the unhappy ones. We first found this company through Angie's list and are so happy we called them. They have been to our house 3 times and every time the work has been excellent! Last Sunday night as we were going to bed we heard the water running. Looking around we discovered the valve that feeds the water into the house was spurting water and looked like a water fountain. My husband had to go out at midnight and shut the water off at the main. Monday morning we called 5th Generation and when he came by Monday afternoon to assess the problem Sid was able to fix it on the spot. Aah, running water again! They charge reasonable rates, even coming out on Saturdays. Sid and Jerry are both master plumbers and Christie in the office is great! I trust them and will not call anyone else.

Our hot water heater failed at a really bad time. Sid showed up with the replacement water heater and had it installed in record time. It was a pretty tight space to work in, so we were appreciative that the work was able to be done so quickly and effortlessly. The area was cleaned up and put back together so that we didn't have to do anything after it was done. Very professional and friendly. Will have them do our bathroom remodel when we're ready.

We had an issue where the kitchen sink was backing up into our master bathroom tub even though they were far apart in the house. Being a handy guy, I tried snaking the kitchen from under the sink with my 15' snake but wasn't expecting it to fix it since the clog was likely closer to the bathroom. I also tried snaking the line from the bathroom but couldn't get the snake to go down the correct pipe. Due to limited time, I threw in the towel and decided to call a pro who likely had a long snake and possibly a camera if needed. My first call was to Bonney. They had overall great reviews. The scheduling person couldn't tell me how much it would cost to do a simple snake operation but it would be $49 just to show up plus whatever work the tech performs. Many reviews said this is where the surprise charges start racking up, oftentimes into the hundreds. This is when I hit Craigslist to find a plumber who is likely just as skilled, if not more skilled than the Bonney tech would be but without all the big company overhead. Sid, the owner of 5th Generation Plumbing, was one of the guys I contacted. He called me back pretty quickly and said he could come the next day between 11-12 and gave me a quote for snaking. I checked his license on the CSLB site as well as read some reviews. This made me a bit nervous because there were quite a few negative ones. Most of the negative reviews were not related to the quality of work but were related to scheduling. This is quite common with tradespeople and is somewhat understandable as some jobs simply take much longer than estimated. I just wish they would communicate these situations with the next customers a bit better. The next day, Sid called at 11:45 and said they were running about 20-30 minutes late. +1 for good communication. He showed up and quickly cleared my drain and tested the two problem drains. His charge was exactly what he quoted on the phone. I will not hesitate to recommend him to anyone I know who needs a plumber.
